After exploring this image in pastel, I moved on to a larger version (18x24) in oil, working with palette knife for texture.  The Italian landscape is rich with these random, isolated ruins.  

A passing downpour gave a new atmosphere to a cluster of wildflowers in the grass.  18x24

Only occasionally can I catch a view that shows how the green heron earned its name.  This pudgy fellow has clearly had success in his fishing ventures as he eyes his next catch...
