Lent 2022 - 40 Days of Painting

40 Paintings Later - 2022

I challenged myself and this year accomplished my goal.  I chose a new format for most of my paintings – 6x6.  A larger surface than 4x6 allowed for more complex images, and the square layout changed the composition.  I searched and edited many reference photos to accommodate the square composition.  I had enough success with many of these that I may do larger versions later or try them in a different medium. My skills using watercolors are stronger.  The practical achievements are easily listed.

Less obvious is the emotional and spiritual journey.  Art is more than skill.  I think of a friend who recommended setting a goal and including “or better!”  This project achieved that concept for me.  I accomplished 40 paintings and “better!”  I spent time living with places I love in a way that photographs alone cannot achieve.  Painting and drawing create an intimacy with an image.  Unnoticed details become important.  Other elements become unnecessary.  Recreating an experience with shape and color is more than copying a photograph.  The photograph is simply an aid to memory—I remember the place and the moment and try to share what made it magical to me. One level of success is when I achieve that magic for myself.  Another level is if I can share that magic with others.  My journey continues. I invite you to come along.

Peace be with you!
